Abstract

Audible acoustic emissions from overhead high-voltage lines (OHL) have become an important aspect in the operation and new construction of high voltage lines. Audible emission measurements of conductors in high voltage labs have been established. In the field, sound measurements for high voltage lines are carried out from the ground. Due to the distance, however, these measurements are only of limited value. So far, no simple measurement system for acoustic measurements directly on the line exists. In this work, the design of a sensor node for acoustic emission measurements on high voltage lines using a MEMS microphone is presented. Relevant aspects regarding the design of the acoustic path for the microphone system are presented. The functionality of the system in a high voltage lab is presented. Furthermore, different acoustic measurements for dry lines and lines under emulated rain conditions are presented and the capabilities of the presented system are discussed.
