Abstract
As part of a laboratory exercise, the goal was to reproduce Raman measurements that were published in two papers, check if they are correct, and, especially for the older paper, see if we could get improved results on modern equipment.
The first paper chosen is the temperature dependent study of beryl by Kloprogge and Frost [1]. Unfortunately they seem to have made a mistake with regards to the crystal orientation (fig. a,b). In addition, a mysterious band at 1155 cm-1 appears in their study that is a photolumines-cent band (not a Raman band), which is only visible with the specific wavelength they used, here they simple got really unlucky (fig. c).
The second paper chosen is the study of ethanol bands in ethanol-water solutions by Li et al. [2], where we could partially reproduce their results with regard to the C-O-vibrational bands, but found different results for the hydrogen based vibrational bands (C-H, O-H).
